Those who fancy
themselves history buffs may enjoy hearing more
about the history of steam cleaners. As with the
case of many of today’s most used products,
steam cleaners started out as an accident. In
1926, Frank Ofeldt, an employee of a
Pennsylvanian water heater and boiler company
was looking for a better way to distill whiskey
during Prohibition. He never intended to create
a new way to clean and sanitize.
In the process of making improvements on his new
device, known as Ofeldt's Still, he
inadvertently noticed the additional effects of
steam released through the pressure release
valve. His big inspiration came about when in
cleaned up the grease that was covering his
garage floor. It didn’t take long for him to
transform his still into a commercially viable
cleaning product. As with any story, there is
more to be told, but we will have to leave that
to serious history students.
